Holy crap, it’s been over a year since I started this adventure! Where did the time go? Oh yeah, we settled into a new town and home and school, hosted and attended a few parties, took a few trips, launched a new business, survived a family wedding and a trip abroad with kids. Oh, and there was a whole lot of bourbon!
So, odd blog name, huh? If you’ve read the About Me page you’ll know that Gina came up with BoBaBuBa (Bourbon | Baking | Bubbles | Babies) when I was fretting about not knowing what to write or what my focus should be. Why pick one topic when you can pick a few and have a fun little name?
I know, I know, I’ve actually written very little about bourbon. In my defense, I’m not nearly qualified to sit here and tell you such and such bourbon has vanilla notes and a hint of fruit. Uh, nope. I’m maybe an advanced beginner bourbon/whiskey drinker. Even then, as I type it I can picture a few friends laughing that I’m barely even a novice!
But here’s the thing – I may not write much about bourbon, but these posts are mostly fueled by Wild Turkey or Four Roses or whatever else we have in the bar. I always write with at least a splash of something in my glass. Doesn’t that count?
Moving on. Then there’s the Ba – baking. I really like to bake. Hell, I even started a business because of it. So why not combine these two interests? Baking and Bourbon! Bourbon and Baking!
My first attempt: salted bourbon caramels. Gorgeous. Delicious. Addictive.
Only problem? Absolutely zero bourbon flavor. Why waste a double shot in a recipe demanding 20 minutes of constant stirring when there’s not even a hint of bourbon flavor? I’d much rather just drink the bourbon whilst making my favorite drunk food – cake!!
Oh wait, no, I forgot – I made bourbon chocolate pie for PPC once a few years ago (remember that, Uncle Chris??). Now that I’ve become an official baker and blogger, I decided to try my hand at Chocolate Bourbon Pecan Pie. I’ll tell you, it’s not my favorite pie. But then, what the hell do I know, I have weird taste in pie. Everyone else seems to like it and it does look pretty. Win.
Then I finally made boozy brownies on a recent Thursday night – can you believe it only took me a week to realize why my Four Roses bottle was empty? Unrelated, but on that same Thursday, I ended up watching a friend’s kids. It was totally last minute and the brownies were already ready for PPC, so I said what the crap – kids, let’s have a treat!
Best part of the night? When my friend’s son didn’t eat the brownie (he’s not into sweets, crazy, I know!), my 8-year-old sagely said, well, it’s because of the bourbon.
I know what you’re thinking – everyone loves brownies! And if you like bourbon, what’s better than a rich fudge brownie with a kick?
Here’s my answer – I might have found something even better. With the coming crisp weather of my favorite season, new fall recipes abound. So I spent a little time one morning pulling a few together. As per my usual, I made a few tweaks and out came a Maple Bourbon Cupcake. In the words of my 5-year-old, ‘SERIOUSLY??’
Yep. Seriously. I announced to my friend Julie that night at dinner – this might be the best thing I’ve ever made besides my children. Yep, they’re that good. Now I just need a fun name for this cake so I can add it to my menu!
So, what shall I bake next? A friend came by this weekend and suggested bourbon cheesecake. What do you think?
